Sustainability Progress and Innovations

ABB's commitment towards decarbonizing digital infrastructure

As the digital landscape continues to expand, the data center industry is witnessing unprecedented growth. With this expansion comes great responsibility to the environment and surrounding communities to stay committed to our sustainability agendas. To close out 2024, we want to reflect on the progress made by our teams to continue along our sustainability journey as an organization and stay at the core of accelerating the energy transition.

These are a few key highlights our teams accomplished this year:
ABB signed on to the iMasons Climate Accord™ pledging to do our part to drive the reduction of carbon within digital infrastructure. The iMasons Climate Accord™ coalition works towards the industry adoption of an open standard to report carbon in data center power, materials, and equipment and a maturity model to report participant progress. This pledge was timely as our teams recently announced updated sustainability targets for 2030 and 2050 highlighting a shift from achieving carbon neutrality to net zero across our business areas. In parallel, our teams worked diligently to achieve third-party acceptance on these new targets. As a result, these targets were officially approved by the Science Based Target Initiative, SBTi, as of June this year.

The importance of sustainability in the data center industry cannot be overstated. We are committed suppliers and partners and aim to work collectively towards a more sustainable model to support industry growth without sacrificing planet.

Data Centers Deserve Full Transparency on Carbon Emissions from Suppliers

As global demand for data centers grows, sustainable solutions are increasingly vital. Emissions data, particularly related to Scope 3 emissions, plays a significant role in managing environmental impact. The responsibility for reducing emissions doesn’t fall solely on data center operators. Equipment suppliers must also take a proactive approach in measuring, tracking, and sharing emissions data.
